Here we presented the following short guideline for foreign researchers and students who have plans visit to Indonesia with the specific mission.

Before you depart to Indonesia, you will need to apply for a study permit and visa. Study permits are issued by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristek). Call / telex visas are issued by the Directorate General of Immigration of the Republic of Indonesia in your home country after the issuance of your Study permit. Prior to your departure, you should take a call / telex visa at the Indonesian Embassy in your country to enter Indonesia.

Please check whether you need a Social & Cultural Visit Visa (VKSB) or a Temporary Residence Visa to enter Indonesia for study purposes. The VKSB is valid for 30-60 days and can be extended for every 30 days for 4 consecutive times for a total of 180 days. Only a single entry. Students can apply for the VKSB several times. Temporary residency visas are valid for 6 – 12 months and can be extended. International students must start applying for this visa 2 – 3 months prior to their arrival and must report to the immigration office within 7 days of arrival in Indonesia.

To be sure, you should contact the Indonesian Embassy or consulate in your home country to check visa regulations before traveling to Indonesia. Please check the website of the Indonesian Embassy for the requirements for your visa application. Do not enter Indonesia with a tourist visa or visa on arrival.

Upon your arrival at Soekarno Hatta Airport, you will follow the signs to the Immigration checkpoint. At that location, you must present your passport, visa, and your Incoming Passenger Card. Please check your visa which is attached to your passport. There will be information on the type of visa/length of stay at the bottom left. If your visa type is C316 / 6 months, make sure you receive an appropriate stamp that says “limited stay permit”. And if your visa type is B211A / 60 days, make sure you receive the proper stamp that says “visitor visa”. Confirm the above information before you leave the immigration counter. You may also need to show confirmation of your registration.

Once you have cleared this checkpoint, you will enter the baggage room where you can claim your belongings and proceed to customs and baggage checks. Your baggage, including your hand luggage, will be x-rayed. Customs officials will ask you to open your belongings so they can inspect these items. If customs officials determine that an item is not quarantined, you will be allowed to keep the item and move it. If the items are quarantined, they will be confiscated and destroyed, or held for decontamination and returned to you at a later date.
